Ultimate Coding Bundle (Standard Edition)

The gameplay is exactly the same — every card, rule and strategy is identical. The Deluxe edition upgrades the components: two sets of cards are replaced with sturdier, more tactile pieces that make the game easier to manage on the table.

Deluxe upgrades:

• 6 Player Boards replace the 12 Resource Cards — your resources sit in one clear place instead of a spread of cards, which makes tracking easier (especially for younger players and classrooms)
• 18 Ship Tokens replace the 18 Ship Cards — your fleet becomes physical pieces you can see and move, rather than cards in a row

Included in both editions:

• 60 Power Cards
• 21 Spudnet Cards
• 105 Battlechips Cards
• A sackful of Potato Tokens
• A pack of Energy Tokens
• 20 Upgrade Tokens
• 1 Starting Player Token
• 12 Captain Cards

Standard only: 12 Resource Cards · 18 Ship Cards

Deluxe only: 6 Player Boards · 18 Ship Tokens

Which should you choose? If you want the full Battlechips experience at the lowest price, Standard gives you every bit of the game. If you'll be playing often, gifting it, or using it with a group, Deluxe is worth the small step up — the boards and tokens keep the table tidy and give the game real presence.

Battlechips is designed for ages 10 and up. It asks a little more of players than a typical kids' game: some basic arithmetic (counting energy, calculating attack damage) and a good dose of strategic thinking, since the best moves come from planning several cards ahead. Games run 30–120 minutes, so it also rewards a longer attention span.

That "and up" is real. Battlechips is the advanced game in the series, and it's just as popular with teenagers, adults and serious board-gamers as with kids — one verified buyer bought it for a grad student, and software developers regularly review it as a game they enjoy. It works equally well for a family evening, a classroom, or a group of adults.

Younger than 10? Start with Potato Pirates: The Original (ages 7+). It teaches the foundations — loops, conditionals and functions — in a faster, simpler game, and it's the natural stepping stone to Battlechips. A confident 8- or 9-year-old who's already played the Original can usually make the jump with an adult alongside.

Battlechips covers 15 core computer science concepts, organised into three families — the same building blocks found in every real programming language:

Loops — repeating actions efficiently

For loops · While loops · Infinite loops · Nested loops · Recursion

Control flow — making decisions

If-Else · If-OR · If-AND · Boolean statements · Switch statements

Error handling — when things go wrong

Try-Catch · Break · Throw · Failure conditions · Debugging

Each concept is a card your child actually plays, so they learn by using it to win, not by memorising a definition. The three families build on each other: loops let you do more, control flow lets you choose wisely, and error handling teaches the most underrated skill in programming — recovering when a plan fails. Together they're the foundation your child will recognise the moment they open Python, Scratch or JavaScript.

In Battlechips, the cards are the code. Every move is built from real programming statements — a for loop to repeat an action, an if/else to choose between two moves, a try/catch to recover when a plan fails. To win, your child has to chain them into something that works, so they're writing and debugging small programs every turn, without a screen.

Nobody lectures them on what a loop is. They discover a loop lets them roast three potatoes instead of one, and it sticks because it won the round.

Designed for ages 10+, Battlechips goes beyond the basics into loops, conditionals, error handling and recursion — the concepts real computer science students study. The 200-page adventure comic adds solo coding challenges across seven chapters. When your child later meets Python or Scratch, the syntax will be new but the logic will already feel familiar.
